Action RPG Combat Systems Compared: Souls, Monster Hunter, and Beyond

Not all action RPGs play the same. The differences between Soulsborne combat, Monster Hunter’s weapon system, and character action games like Devil May Cry determine which games you will love and which will frustrate you. This comparison breaks down the major action RPG combat philosophies.

Soulsborne (Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Sekiro)

Core philosophy: Patience, observation, and punishment windows.

Soulsborne combat is built on a cycle: observe enemy attack, dodge or block, punish during recovery frames. Stamina management gates your actions. You cannot attack, dodge, and block indefinitely. Every action has a cost, and overcommitting is punished with death.

Dodge i-frames are the fundamental skill. During the early frames of a roll, your character is invulnerable. Learning the exact timing to roll through attacks rather than away from them is the core skill that separates struggling players from confident ones.

Build variety ranges from heavy tank builds that block everything to nimble dex builds that rely entirely on dodging. Elden Ring expanded this further with Ashes of War customization and Spirit Summon companions.

Sekiro breaks the mold by replacing stamina with posture. Instead of dodging and punishing, you deflect attacks to break the enemy’s posture, then execute a death blow. It demands more aggressive, reactive play.

Monster Hunter (World, Rise, Wilds)

Core philosophy: Commitment, positioning, and monster knowledge.

Monster Hunter weapons have long animation commitments. A Greatsword charged slash takes several seconds, during which you cannot cancel. The skill expression comes from predicting where the monster will be when your attack lands, not reacting to what it does.

Each of the 14 weapon types plays like an entirely different game. Dual Blades are fast and mobile. Gunlance is a walking fortress. Hunting Horn buffs the party while attacking. The weapon variety ensures every player finds something that matches their style.

Monster knowledge replaces traditional boss pattern memorization. Each monster has tells for specific attacks, flinch thresholds for stagger opportunities, and elemental weaknesses.

Character Action (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta)

Core philosophy: Style, combo creativity, and mechanical expression.

These games grade your performance on style. Using varied combos, staying aggressive, and avoiding damage earns higher ranks. The skill ceiling is effectively infinite because you can always find more creative, more optimal combo routes.

Combat is faster than Soulsborne games and rewards offensive play over defensive patience. Dodge offsets and parry windows exist but serve as combo extenders rather than the primary defensive tool.

Which System Is Right for You?

If you enjoy methodical, high-stakes combat where every decision matters: Soulsborne. If you enjoy mastering a specific weapon and fighting giant creatures: Monster Hunter. If you enjoy expressive, fast-paced combat that rewards creativity: Character Action.

Many players enjoy all three. The skills transfer. Soulsborne dodge timing helps in Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter positioning helps in Soulsborne. Character Action combo awareness helps everywhere.

Hybrid Approaches

Some games blend multiple combat philosophies. God of War 2018 and Ragnarok combines Soulsborne-style dodge windows and shield parries with character action combo depth. The result is accessible combat with significant skill expression.

Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor take Soulsborne deflection mechanics and add mobility moves like wall-running and Force powers. The lightsaber combat feels distinctly Star Wars while maintaining Soulsborne tension.

Nioh and Nioh 2 layer Monster Hunter-style weapon mastery onto a Soulsborne framework. The stance system for each weapon creates enormous depth. Ki pulse management adds a timing mechanic that rewards rhythmic play.

The Role of Build Diversity

Action RPGs vary enormously in how much build diversity affects combat. Dark Souls offers completely different combat experiences between a strength build with colossal weapons and a dexterity build with curved swords. Monster Hunter 14 weapon types each fundamentally change how you approach every fight.

Character action games typically have less build diversity but more mechanical depth within each option. Dante four styles in Devil May Cry 5 offer different combat approaches, but they layer on top of each other rather than replacing each other.

Accessibility Considerations

Modern action RPGs increasingly offer accessibility options that let players engage with the combat at their preferred intensity. Elden Ring Spirit Ashes and cooperative multiplayer serve as organic difficulty adjustment. God of War multiple difficulty levels adjust enemy aggression and damage. These options expand the audience without removing the challenge for players who want it.
