Best Elder Scrolls Builds: Skyrim Character Builds That Never Get Old
Skyrim has been modded, replayed, and remastered for over a decade, yet players keep coming back. A big part of that longevity is the flexible character system that lets you build almost anything. Here are the most effective and enjoyable builds, from the infamous stealth archer to the rarely attempted pacifist Illusion mage.
The Stealth Archer
Every Skyrim player eventually becomes a stealth archer, and for good reason. Sneak attack multipliers with bows deal 3x damage at base, scaling to 6x with the relevant perks. Combined with the Archery skill tree’s damage bonuses and slow-time effects, you can eliminate entire dungeons without being detected.
Key perks: Overdraw (5 ranks), Eagle Eye, Steady Hand, Stealth (5 ranks), Deadly Aim, Silence. Use the Bound Bow spell from Conjuration to get an excellent weapon without any smithing investment.
The build trivializes most content but remains deeply satisfying. There is something primal about crouching in shadows and watching enemies fall before they know you exist.
The Battlemage
Combine Destruction magic with heavy armor and one-handed weapons. Cast spells with your left hand, swing a mace with your right. The Battlemage is versatile, engaging at both range and melee.
Key investment: One-Handed, Destruction, Heavy Armor, Enchanting. Enchanting is critical because dual-enchanted gear with Fortify Destruction and Fortify One-Handed creates a character that excels at everything.
The Pure Mage
Ignore weapons entirely. Destruction for damage, Conjuration for summoned allies, Alteration for armor spells, Restoration for healing. The pure mage is challenging early but becomes godlike by level 30.
The biggest hurdle is magicka management. Enchanting gear with Fortify Destruction reduces spell costs, eventually reaching 100 percent reduction, which means free Destruction spells forever. At that point, you are a walking artillery piece.
The Illusion Pacifist
Cast Calm, Fury, and Fear to control enemies without killing them directly. Use Fury to make enemies fight each other. The Illusion tree’s Master-level spells affect all creatures regardless of level. This is the most unique way to play Skyrim and makes the game feel entirely different.
The Necromancer
Conjuration plus Restoration’s undead-related perks create a character who raises the dead and commands an undead army. The Dead Thrall spell permanently reanimates a powerful corpse. Combined with the Ritual Stone power, you can march through Skyrim with a small army.

The Sword and Board Tank
Pure defensive builds are underrated in Skyrim. Block tree perks allow shield bashing to stagger enemies, reduce incoming damage to near zero with a raised shield, and even deflect arrows. Combined with Heavy Armor perks that reduce incoming damage further, this build turns you into an immovable object.
The Shield of Ysgramor is one of the best shields in the game, found during the Companions questline. Pair it with Spellbreaker from the Daedric quest for Peryite, which creates a ward that blocks incoming spells.
The Werewolf
The Companions questline grants lycanthropy, which transforms your character into a powerful werewolf. The werewolf form has its own skill tree unlocked through feeding on corpses. At maximum investment, werewolf form grants massive health bonuses, area knockdown attacks, and summoned wolf companions.
The primary advantage is the health pool. Werewolf transformations scale with your level and can provide thousands of hit points at higher levels. The primary disadvantage is losing access to your equipment and spells during transformation.
Enchanting: The Universal Enhancer
Regardless of build, Enchanting is the single most impactful skill in Skyrim. Double enchantments at Enchanting 100 with the Extra Effect perk let you place two enchantments on every piece of gear. This means every item slot provides two powerful bonuses.
Even without exploiting the Fortify loop, legitimately enchanted gear transforms any build from competent to dominant. If you are only going to invest in one crafting skill, make it Enchanting.
