Best RPG Crafting Builds: Characters Who Create Their Own Power
Best RPG Crafting Builds: Characters Who Create Their Own Power
Crafting-focused builds turn your character from a warrior into a manufacturer. When optimized, crafting builds produce equipment that vastly outperforms anything found as loot. These builds exploit each game’s crafting system to its theoretical maximum.
Skyrim: The Enchanting-Alchemy-Smithing Loop
Skyrim’s most powerful character is not a warrior or mage but a crafter. The loop works like this: craft Fortify Enchanting potions with Alchemy, drink them and enchant gear with Fortify Alchemy, wear that gear to make stronger potions, repeat. After several iterations, your Fortify Smithing potions let you improve weapons to absurd damage values, and your enchantments add hundreds of damage per hit.
A complete crafting build needs Alchemy to 100 (with Benefactor and Physician perks), Enchanting to 100 (with all five ranks of Enchanter plus Insightful Enchanter and Corpus Enchanter), and Smithing to 100 (with the full right side to Daedric or Dragon). The result is weapons dealing over 500 damage per hit and armor exceeding the cap.
Monster Hunter World: The Handicraft Critical Eye Build
In Monster Hunter, your “build” is your crafted armor set. The optimal damage set combines pieces from different monsters: Kaiser Crown (Teostra) for Critical Eye, Damascus Mail for Handicraft, Teostra Braces for more Critical Eye, and attack-boosting decorations in every slot. The weapon is crafted from a specific monster whose raw damage and sharpness match the skill setup.
The crafting challenge is farming specific rare drops. A Rathian Ruby (2% carve chance) might take dozens of hunts. Crafting builds in Monster Hunter are inseparable from combat skill because you must kill the monsters to craft from their parts.
FFXIV: The Pentamelded Crafter
FFXIV’s endgame crafting requires crafting gear for your crafter. The progression is circular: use current-tier crafting gear to make next-tier crafting gear. Pentamelding (attaching five materia to gear that officially holds two slots, with decreasing success rates for the overmelds) pushes stats above normal caps. A pentamelded crafter can HQ items that unpentamelded crafters literally cannot produce.
The investment is significant: hundreds of thousands of gil in materia and a 5-17% success rate on the fifth overmeld. But the result is a character who can craft anything in the game at the highest quality, generating consistent income selling HQ raid food, potions, and gear.
Baldur’s Gate 3: The Elixir Specialist
BG3’s crafting is limited but the Elixir system creates “builds” around crafted consumables. An Elixir of Bloodlust (grants an extra action when you kill an enemy) combined with a Great Weapon Master Fighter turns every kill into a chain reaction. Combine with a supply of Elixirs of Hill Giant Strength (sets Strength to 21, freeing attribute points for other stats) and your character’s build is effectively defined by what you craft.
Elden Ring: The Consumable Craftsman
Elden Ring’s Cookbooks unlock craftable items that most players ignore. Exalted Flesh (boosted attack power for 30 seconds), Fire Grease (fire damage added to weapons), and Uplifting Aromatic (party-wide damage buff) are all craftable and stack with other buffs. An optimized crafter keeps a hotbar of consumables that match each encounter: fire grease for frost enemies, Holy Grease for undead, Preserving Boluses for Scarlet Rot areas. The Frenzied Cookbook items are particularly strong but require farming specific ingredients.
The Crafting Build Philosophy
Crafting builds trade convenience for power. You spend hours farming materials and optimizing combinations to produce results that pure combat builds cannot match. The satisfaction comes from knowing your character’s strength is something you constructed through system knowledge rather than something the game handed you through level scaling.
