Diablo 4 Endgame Guide: What to Do After the Campaign

Completing Diablo 4’s campaign unlocks the real game. The endgame systems layer on top of the base experience to create hundreds of hours of progression through Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide events, the Pit of Artificers, and seasonal content. Understanding these systems and their interconnections is the key to pushing your character from World Tier 3 into the punishing World Tier 4 and beyond.

World Tier Progression

After finishing the campaign, your first priority is unlocking World Tier 3 by completing the Cathedral of Light capstone dungeon in Kyovashad. World Tier 3 introduces Sacred item drops, which represent a massive power spike over normal gear. Once you reach approximately level sixty and have a full set of Sacred gear, tackle the Fallen Temple capstone dungeon to unlock World Tier 4, where Ancestral items begin dropping with significantly higher stat rolls that serve as the baseline for all endgame builds.

The difficulty jump between World Tier 3 and World Tier 4 is the steepest in the game. Prepare by capping your resistances, socketing appropriate gems, and ensuring your build has both damage mitigation and sustain through life-on-hit or barrier generation.

Nightmare Dungeons

Nightmare Dungeons are the bread and butter of endgame progression. You activate them using Nightmare Sigils, which drop from completing other Nightmare Dungeons, Helltide chests, and world boss kills. Each sigil specifies a dungeon, a tier number, and affixes that modify difficulty. Affixes range from manageable effects like increased monster density to brutal ones like Lightning Storm, which drops bolts on your position every few seconds.

Higher-tier Nightmare Dungeons drop better loot and more experience. They also provide Glyph experience, which is critical for empowering your Paragon Board. Each completed dungeon grants a fixed amount of Glyph XP, and leveling glyphs from their base radius of three tiles to their maximum of four tiles significantly boosts their power. Focus on leveling your build-defining glyphs first before spreading XP across secondary options.

The Helltide System

Helltides are zone-wide events lasting one hour, spawning in different regions on a rotating schedule. During a Helltide, the entire zone fills with empowered demons that drop Aberrant Cinders, a temporary currency that vanishes when the Helltide ends or when you die. You spend Cinders to open Tortured Gift chests scattered throughout the zone, with the most valuable chests costing 175 Cinders and guaranteeing multiple high-quality drops including a chance at Unique items.

The rarest encounter in Helltides is the Blood Maiden summoning event, which requires players to deposit collected body parts at an altar. Defeating the Blood Maiden rewards everyone with a large loot explosion and bonus experience that makes the event worth prioritizing over chest farming.

The Pit of Artificers

The Pit is Diablo 4’s greater-rift equivalent, introduced in Season 4. It is a timed dungeon that you must clear within ten minutes. Completing the Pit within the time limit grants Masterworking materials used to upgrade gear at the Blacksmith. Masterworking adds percentage-based bonuses to individual affixes on your items, with every fourth level providing a critical boost that multiplies one random affix’s value significantly.

Pushing higher Pit tiers provides higher-tier Masterworking materials. Tiers 1 through 30 drop Obducite, tiers 31 through 60 drop Ingolith, and tiers 61 through 100 drop Neathiron. Most endgame builds need full Neathiron-level Masterworking to reach their damage ceiling, making Pit progression the primary long-term goal.

Build Optimization and Seasonal Play

Endgame build optimization revolves around three layers: Skill Tree, Paragon Board, and Gear Affixes. Tempering lets you reroll specific affix categories on items, but each item has a limited number of attempts before it bricks. Plan your desired affixes before spending rolls. Each season introduces a new mechanic and questline, and seasonal characters start fresh with access to the seasonal mechanic immediately after the campaign skip. At season’s end, characters transfer to the Eternal Realm with all progress intact.
