Final Fantasy XIV Job Guide: Finding Your Role in Eorzea

Final Fantasy XIV’s job system is one of the most flexible in any MMO. A single character can unlock and level every job in the game by switching your equipped weapon. With over twenty jobs spanning four roles, choosing where to start and where to invest your time can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down every role and highlights what makes each job distinct.

The Tank Role

Tanks hold enemy attention and mitigate damage through defensive cooldowns. FFXIV has four tank jobs. Paladin combines sword-and-shield attacks with healing magic and Hallowed Ground, a complete invulnerability skill. Warrior is the most self-sufficient tank, with massive self-healing through Inner Beast combos that can sustain through dungeon pulls without healer support. Dark Knight uses a resource called Darkside alongside Living Shadow, a powerful shadow clone summon. Gunbreaker plays the most aggressively, with a rapid-fire Gnashing Fang combo that feels closer to a melee DPS rotation than a typical tank.

All four tanks are viable at every content level. The primary difference is complexity: Paladin and Warrior are simpler, while Dark Knight and Gunbreaker demand tighter cooldown management in high-end raids like Savage and Ultimate.

The Healer Role

Healers keep the party alive and contribute damage during downtime. The four healers split into pure healers and barrier healers. White Mage offers powerful direct heals like Cure III and strong area damage through Holy. Astrologian provides card-based party buffs and mobile healing. Scholar pairs with a fairy pet for passive healing while building shields. Sage heals through dealing damage via Kardia, converting attack damage into healing on a designated ally.

In Savage and Ultimate raids, compositions typically include one pure healer and one barrier healer. White Mage and Sage is the most popular pairing because their toolkits complement each other without overlapping.

Melee DPS Jobs

Melee jobs stand close to enemies and deliver sustained or burst damage. Monk has the fastest global cooldown and chains positional attacks from the rear and flank. Dragoon delivers powerful burst windows through Jump abilities and has the most dramatic attack animations. Ninja brings utility through Trick Attack, a debuff increasing all damage the target receives. Samurai focuses on pure personal damage with no party buffs, making it the top choice for players who prioritize personal DPS numbers. Reaper summons a void avatar for burst phases and flows smoothly between filler and burst windows. Viper, added in Dawntrail, chains dual-blade combos into powerful finishers with seamless rhythm.

Ranged Physical DPS Jobs

Ranged physical jobs attack from distance and provide party-wide buffs. Bard plays three songs that buff party damage and has a proc-based rotation that changes every few seconds. Machinist builds gauge to deploy a robot and enters a hypercharge burst phase with rapid attacks. Dancer uses random procs to build toward powerful finishing moves and provides the strongest single-target damage buff through Closed Position.

Ranged Magical DPS Jobs

Casters bring area damage and unique utility. Black Mage is the hardest-hitting job but demands near-perfect positioning to maintain its Astral Fire and Umbral Ice cycle. Summoner rotates through Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda phases for a visually spectacular and mobile rotation. Red Mage balances black and white mana for a melee combo finisher and provides valuable party resurrection utility. Pictomancer, new in Dawntrail, paints magical canvases during downtime and unleashes them as powerful attacks during burst windows.

Choosing Your First Job

For new players, Warrior or Paladin offer the fastest dungeon queues with straightforward rotations. Dancer and Summoner are the most approachable DPS jobs. White Mage is the best starting healer because its toolkit is intuitive. Remember that FFXIV lets you try every job on one character, so your first choice is never permanent. Experiment freely once you unlock additional jobs through class quests.
